Yassıada During the Naval Forces Command
In 1978, the island was abandoned to its fate when the Turkish Naval Forces moved to Karamürsel. Yassıada was open for tourist visitation for a while, until 1986. After this, Istanbul University Fisheries Institute and Faculty was given the opportunity to carry out certain courses in the island, but this was later abandoned.
Undoubtedly, the most important historical event which brought prominence to the island was the Yassıada Courts, which were created to try Democrat Party members as a result of the military coup of 27 May 1960. In the Yassıada Courts, a total of 592 defendants who were members of the Democratic Party, which was the governing party between 1950 and 1960, were tried in 19 different cases
Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and Hasan Polatkan were executed on September 16, 1961, and Adnan Menderes on September 17, on Imrali Island, located in the south of the Marmara Sea.
